EXCERPT:
It was too much. The smell, the sound of the place hadn't changed even after more than twenty years. Little things were different than I remembered but not much. I hadn't played a show in my hometown since I was eighteen. That was the year I headed off 'to make it' in the music business. I guess I did it. Some days I feel like I have, others…well, let’s just say that some days I feel like I’ve made it. This morning I have a meeting with my first music teacher and his students. I'm supposed to give them some insight, some inspiration. I feel less like a good example and more like a cautionary tale today. The saying ‘You can’t go home again’ kept popping into my head.
The last night I played here I signed the contract that started my career. It screwed me out of a lot of money but I used it to make a name for myself. It also meant the end of my band. Despite all the setbacks, I kept moving and kept working until I scratched out a life for myself. Some of the gigs weren’t much to brag about, but that's the way it is. I am the sum total of where I've been and what I've done. What bothers me are the people and places I left behind in the process.
I left someone behind the last night I was here. That night I met an amazing girl who interviewed me for the local paper. She'd written a story about my band and wanted to follow up with me on the night the label signed me. I wanted to follow up with her for my own reasons. We spent the night celebrating with the band and then capped it off with a night I'd never forgotten. Her name was Sonia. She had a soft, sweet, childlike voice and a body that was built for sex.
