Emma by Jane Austen is a delightful satire of romance and manners amongst genteel women in Georgian-Regency England. The book, which was first published in December 1815, deals with the themes of youthful pride and the dangers that can ensue when romantic intentions are misunderstood. Emma Woodhouse is a young, beautiful, amusing and privileged. She lives on the Hartfield estate in Surrey with her elderly, widowed, hypochondriac father.

Emma is spoiled and arrogant, often acting without thinking. She feels that she is an ideal matchmaker, where in fact nothing could be further from the truth. As a result she meddles in other people’s lives, often led by an over active imagination and misconstruing the reactions of those around her.

The story starts with the wedding of Emma’s friend and former governess, Miss Taylor. Emma believes that she was responsible for bringing her friend and her new husband together. She decides that she quite likes matchmaking and, despite being advised not to do so, she sets about attempting to find a match for her new friend Harriet Smith, a sweet, pretty, but not terribly bright seventeen year old.
