1961-62 was a golden season for Dundee Football Club. They became Champions of Scotland by winning the Scottish League title for the first and, to date, only time in their history. They then became princes of Europe the following year with their fabulous European Cup adventure. For any club outside the Old Firm to win the Scottish title takes something special, and the Dark Blue side of that time was exceptional. The names of Liney, Hamilton, Cox, Seith, Ure, Wishart, Smith, Penman, Cousin, Gilzean and Robertson slip as easily off the tongue for younger fans as for those old enough to have witnessed the greatest team in Dens Park history. With a 5-1 victory at Ibrox against defending champions Rangers, and a 4-1 derby win at home to Dundee United, Dundees championship season was full of drama and goals. It climaxed with unforgettable scenes as the title was clinched at St Johnstone on 28 April 1962. A year later, only AC Milan stood between Dundee and the European Cup final. Bob Shanklys side had conquered Scotland and came close to conquering Europe. Poignant, funny, profound this is a classic tale of triumph against the odds, when Dundee were Champions of Scotland.
