The damn woman was a smart, somewhat delusional, shy but cocky female writer with no family but for a couple of odd friends whose past company had given her plenty of reasons to hate cops. Until him. All she wished for was a regular job like ordinary people had so she could turn the reality of everyday life into fiction. The Big guy was a tough, no-nonsense, independent forty-ish chief homicide detective, more bent on getting results than following the law. He had money to spare and nothing to lose. Until her. He did things his way, and did them thoroughly, including her.

The two liked each other. Sparks flew. It could be just your casual love affair if it wasn’t for dead bodies which somehow kept turning up. Beautiful women. So white. Parts of them at least.
To keep her safe, and because frankly she didn’t give him much of a choice, he offered to let her hang at the office. She was to be a filing clerk (fancy title for a snoop), until he could suspend her, fire her or, even better, get her to quit. That was forgetting how resourceful she could be (or downright reckless, especially with some help from her ex-boyfriend’s agoraphobic hacker buddy), and now his office was turning into a fucking zoo. And to say all she wanted was a regular job and a casual affair. All he wanted was for her to spend her days doing her damn book research at the library and her nights at his place.

“You will let me read files and take notes as I want?”
“Absolutely.” He was charming when he wanted to be, wasn’t he? And he did seem to have made up his mind about letting her do her research. Not that she was convinced working in his office was such a good thing. What if she liked him at work? Didn’t she already like him too much? If she had her way, all of her ways, she would have been allowed to take the files home but HR had said no, absolutely non-negotiable. “And I won’t fetch you coffee.”
“Of course not.”
Lucky she wasn’t a mind reader because damn if he wasn’t thinking of ways to change her mind. If on such an occasion, she happened to be wearing that outfit with the skirt and heels, or any one of the many other sexy outfits she had waiting in her closet, well, it would make it all worth it. Not that he intended to have her around long, that wasn’t part of his new emergency plan.
