This story takes place fifteen years after the zombie pandemic. Society thrives in heavily populated “safe zones” provided for and protected by The Desjardin Group (TDG). People have long since traded their freedom for security, comfort, and media diversions in this restructured America. The CEO of TDG, John Duvall, is the main antagonist for Dr. Chen (Dr. Zom). TDG are on the verge of an historic announcement, the formation of The Corporate States of America.
Dr. Zom, dubbed by the patients he treated in the initial stages of the crisis, is hiding in the heavily infested abandoned cities known as “hot zones”. Dr. Zom fled there years earlier battling his own infection with the hopes of reuniting with his wife and children, who were held by TDG as a form of extortion to keep Dr. Zom doggedly pursuing a “marketable” solution to the growing plague. His clandestine pursuits, geared towards nano technology to repair and eliminate the infection. He tests it on himself and replaces his necrotic areas and limbs with cybernetic prosthesis.
Shortly after his escape from Desjardin he discovers, while defending himself from a zombie attack, that any animated corpse he injects can be controlled. The nanos allow him to extend his awareness and consciousness to the treated zombie. They become a collective with Dr. Zom as the “brain”. This constant repair and manipulation using the nanos has long term effects on the zombies.
