In Vermont, Pete is a moderately successful writer of existential novels, and he writes mystery stories under a pen name known only to his agent and two of his family members (Double P, Inc.).
(A Mystery...)
In the midst of writing his next novel, a mystery built around a mild-mannered accountant, we follow Pete through his life during a single early Summer... a Summer that will change his life forever.
(Within a Mystery...)
When Pete decides to sneak out of his life in Vermont under a cloud and settles in a rural enclave in Georgia, where he will be known as Paul, the mystery he left in Vermont continues to hang over him.
(Within a Love Story...)
In Georgia he hires a secretary and a housekeeper, and sets up a working household as he works to finish his novel. Enter Nora, “too fetching to be a bachelor's secretary," a twenty-eight-year-old still hurting from a recent divorce. Pete's new life starts to become rich with friendships and meaning for him as he establishes a household and workplace as "Paul," and as he meets local citizens... slowly, unexpectedly, Georgia starts to feel like home.
As Nora, gun-shy since her ex-husband is incarcerated for embezzlement, helps Paul to write his mystery novel by typing for him and putting passages on audio tape, she starts to fall in love...with the main character of Paul's novel, Eli Ellington. Though Paul is quite taken with Nora, he is restrained by the memory of two failed marriages... As the two spend time together their resolve against romance begins to lessen, but will either of them be brave (or foolhardy) enough to overcome their fears from past failed relationships to give each other a chance in the greatest mystery of them all? And how will Paul reveal his true identity and and his past to Nora without causing her to view him with disillusionment, and without putting into jeopardy the new home and new life that he has made for himself?
