“Lord, my God, who am I that you should forsake me?
So many unanswered questions live within me. I’m afraid to uncover them because of the blasphemy. If there be a God, please forgive me. When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven, there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives and hurt my very soul. I am told God loves me, and yet the reality of darkness and coldness and emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul. Did I make a mistake in surrendering (myself to you)?”
When you open this book and begin reading you may be surprised when you find out who prayed these words. In fact, this book looks at the issue of depression by studying eight different Bible characters, and there too you may be surprised at what you find. So if you have ever struggled with depression or know someone who does, realize that God may be closer than you think.
Stefano Piva is the lead pastor at Bethany Baptist Church in Richmond, British Columbia.
