Sarah stepped off the Greyhound beside an old dirt track going into Fly Blow, a ghost town reduced to a population of two. Every fall, a storm had descended on the area, destroying the hay and leveling the grain until all the local ranchers had moved out. Only Grandpa Baker and his old caregiver, Mammy Black, remained. Sarah thought she was sent to get the old man ready for the retirement home in Chamenos, but Mammy claimed Sarah "was sent" to help Grandpa Baker with some unfinished business. The old man, his face frozen in a perpetual grimace, smiling on one side and frowning on the other, and his horse, Deceitful, seemed to see what others could not. Both held part of the secret bringing a curse on Fly Blow, but neither could talk. Sarah would find herself in a world of mystery, deception and terror. The family bible with its incomplete geneology; early photos of Grandpa Baker missing from the family album; footprints appearing in the mud; a strange young man living in the woods, hiding his "daddy" under the bed; and old Mammy Black with her psychic gifts lead to a dramatic conclusion of a tragic tale and Sarahs's discovery of why she "was sent."
