Hello Teachers, Parents and Guardians: With the world being saturated with necessity for technology, where will our children learn the important skills needed to act responsible when using technical devices? Who will take up the wire or wireless cause to education them correctly? For me, as always, parent – guardians as teacher first come to mind. What do they see you do? Texting on cell phones while driving; shopping on eBay – even when funds are low; or taking a picture of checks to deposit it in to the bank and getting some fresh air? These are just a few examples of how we model technical responsibliity everyday for our childred. It is essential that our children learn how to use technology wisely. De’J Comp and Jayla are characters I created to help teach my high school students about computer programming. Although, some of my students still have a difficult time understanding this stuff, I haven't given up hope for the next generation of tech students. I asked myself, why isn't anyone teaching our children about computers science? We know they can play the latest cool games, operate the computer to download the latest whatever and select their favorite movies and video games form the Internet. But why are we fooled in to believing that these tasks are associated with them "knowing all about computers?" Don't get me wrong, playing a game and reaching a score of 780,900 takes mad skills. However, if he/she doesn't understand the algorithm or what an algorithm is, where is the real reward? They will forever be buying someone else’s produce, instead of creating their own. So here I am, just that “someone” who is trying to decrease the deficit in the field of computer science. The objective of this picture book, “De’J Comp in “The Big Brown Box” is an introduction book to provide boys and girls, ages 3 -8, an opportunity to say, “Yes we Can!”, start learning about computer technology. In the book, Jayla is a little girl who enjoys learning new things. When her dad brings home a big brown box, her curiosity, patience, and determination leads her to discover a new friend, De'J Comp an android from Cyberspace. The story introduces the cartoon character De'J Comp, an artificial intelligent robot. De'J is on a mission to help young children, ages 4 - 8, learn about computer technology. The purpose of this book is to stimulate the minds of young children by introducing three concepts, staying focused, listening attentively and following instructions. With the help of De’J and using these three very important social skills, Jayla discovers the mystery of De’J in the “Big Brown Box.”
