When my mother passed away fifteen years ago, I was so grieved that I couldn’t look at her things. If I glanced at them, my heart would pain and cry. But now that feeling is no more. A thought does come to mind, besides how can one forget one’s family, especially a parent. Because of the verse that Allah revealed that pray for your parents, “Oh Allah! Have mercy on my parents as they brought me up from infancy.” Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam said, “Honour and respect your parents. By looking at them once with love and honour, you will be rewarded with an accepted Hajj (Mishkaat). Also, if you trouble your parents, then before death you will suffer it’s consequences (Mishkaat).”
Commenting on this hadith Muhadditheen have written, that punishment for sins will be given in the Hereafter, but for hurting parents’ feelings, punishment will be given in this world before death.
Shah Abdul Ghani (R.A.) used to say, “A man fastened a rope around his father’s neck and pulled him a few metres. The father said, “Son, son, don’t pull more than this, otherwise you’ll be called an oppressor.” The son asked, “Ali– I not an oppressor already?” The father replied, “No, not yet, as I had also pulled my father this much, therefore I am being pulled and punished this much. So, if you pull me more than this, you will be an oppressor.”
Hadhrat R.A. used to say, “I have always seen that those who honour their parents, their children honour them, and those who dishonour their parents, their children dishonour them. Thus parental love is a natural thing.
