Jonas meets Maya on the hot, August streets of Manhattan's upper west side and a sizzling afternoon ensues:

"She blushed a little. She reached about and squeezed my hand a moment. The power was having its effect! “Anyway,” she said. “No one was contributing. I even started flashing and that didn't work! All I got were a couple skeevy dudes who tried to catch a glimpse without paying!”

She was taken aback. “Wow.” She looked around. The heat of the day had driven everyone from this stretch of Riverside Drive. Several blocks away, Grant’s Tomb shimmered on the heat. To our right the street wavered. Everyone had been driven indoors into the arms of their air conditioners. She swallowed. “Here?”
