Two children on a mission to save the future

In five thousand years, the human race will cease to exist

Future historians have discovered that humans will be led into their own destruction in the year 7500 A.D.. Nobody knows how this will happen, and nobody has a clue.

Clinging onto the hope that two futures could be created by a Zeta Disruption, Kenneth Yardrow and Savannah Proehl are brought into the 73rd century to save humanity from its demise. With the fate of the future in their hands, Kenneth and Savannah journey to different locations assigned by President Slaan and see for themselves the dangers that await them. In their quest, they solve and unravel mysteries that lead them closer to the answers they need.

They are but two small children-could they really steer the course of humanity from their extinction?

"From what I have learned from Kaloa's research, there is about a one in 156 trillion chance that opening up a pathway from one time to another will produce an effect which causes one person's temporal signature to interact with the time stream in such a way that makes change possible.... I would not be sitting here having this conversation with you. This has only happened because you have the power to change the future.

"There are consequences, however. One consequence in particular. The time stream now has two futures, only one of which can be realized as reality. The first future is one of which a great deal is already known. Hinjo Junta succeeds in decimating the human race. This future may include the destruction of the Soonseen's home planet, though if they indeed decide to colonize Earth as their second home, future history has not yet said one way or the other. The second future is the one we inhabit now, one which we make up as we go along. This future may seem real enough, yet I tell you now, as plain as I can. There's a very real danger that this future may be erased from the time stream. The tangent you have sent us all on may never happen. In that case, the first future would reassert itself."

Kenneth tried to grasp what Daston told him. He concentrated, focusing upon the man's words. He said, "How is that possible? I don't quite understand."

"It's because of the temporal stabilizer. What do you imagine might happen if you took a Zeta Disruption with the ability to affect the time stream's course and stabilized their temporal signature? In your case, the stabilization means that you are continually affecting the time stream. There doesn't reach a point where you stop affecting it. Your body does so all on its own. The fact of your existence is enough. Normally, a Zeta Disruption would have the power to change the future once and only once. The change would occur, the time stream would accept the change and future history would return to being inflexible."
