Charting a Hero's Journey is a guide to the writing of a journal for college students engaged in volunteer community service and study abroad programs. It is based on the work of Joseph Campbell, who, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, documented the universal myth of the hero's journey, and on the following writers, whose journals of study, living, travel, and service abroad are used extensively throughout the assignment: Jane Addams, James Boswell, Emily Bronson Conger, Paul Cowan, Sana Hasan, Langston Hughes, Samuel Johnson, Mary Kingsley, Kathleen Norris, Octavio Paz, and Anthony C. Winkler.
