2. CAPITAL - A Critique of Political Economy: Volume Four – Karl Marx

3. MANIFESTO OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY – Karl Marx

Two of the most important works of modern history, as well as two of the most influential, Capital and The Communist Manifesto  are critique of private property and the social relations it generates.

Marx and Engels presented an analytical approach to the class struggle and the problems of capitalism in The Communist Manifesto. The book also contains their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. However, the book is lack of detailed potential future forms of communism.

Arguing that capitalism would create an ever-increasing division in wealth and welfare to form different classes, Marx predicted its abolition and replacement by socialism with common ownership of property by a common class. Capital and The Communist formed the theoretical foundation of social democratic parties, particularly in Russia, to build socialistic countries. The two works ultimately got propagated throughout the world including North Korea and became the works equal to Bible of the working class.

Marx’s thought of building Soviets to address issues of Capitalism were catastrophic to the world. An estimated 70 million people died under the Soviet regime. The human cost paid for his theory was enormous. Yet despite all this, Marx’s thought is still worshipped by millions by other countries including North Korea and the aged followers in China today.

All of the essential predications by Marx in the two works about world moving direction failed. However, history is a mirror for us. Reading the books, Capital and The Communist Manifesto, we can have a second thought on evolution of our social systems and avoid paying human cost we made in the past by socialistic countries including Soviets and China.

This is a must-read book to understand the foundational thought of a communist party and the nature of a socialistic country.
