A two month old baby boy accidently lands in the Letaba river, and floats down into the Kruger National Park where he is rescued by Yum Yum the crocodile. The baby is taken to Sharp Claws the leopard's lair where it suckles milk from Yellow Tail the leopardess. She names the baby Zimtar, and teaches him to communicate telepathically. Zimtar is raised on leopard and lion's milk. When Zimtar is five years old, Fire Eyes the lion, court master of the Bushveld Court decides to send him to Smoke Eater, alias Pieter du Preez the game ranger. The Bushveld Court is now able to use Zimtar to communicate the animal's problems to the Kruger National Park's management Board.
