George Neff returned from WW II to find a world he no longer understood. His girlfriend is married, most of his friends are gone, and his folks no longer understood him. So he takes to the open road, moving with the seasons and working odd jobs, not wanting to be from anywhere or care for any body. George meets Bo while working at a job, cutting pulpwood, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. They continue to bum around the country together, until they come to the town of Warren.
