In Brave and Bold, our hero, Robert Rushton, is poor, but honest, forthright, and resolute. His father has, apparently, drowned at sea and, unbeknownst to Robert or his mother, has deposited a fortune—$5,000—with a neer-do-well factory superintendent, and father of a snobbish son—a thorn in Robert's side, who causes Robert to be fired from his factory job.

The troubles escalate for poor Robert until an act of almost unbelievable heroism begin to turn the tide. But, his problems are not over. Will he and his mother ever get the $5,000? Is his father really dead? Will the superintendent's son ever get his comeuppance? Very unusual for Alger's books, Robert actually shoots an evil-dooer with the intent of killing him. An action-packed story, sure to satisfy anyone's love of adventure.

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
