Vijay Tendulkar is one of the best known playwrights in modern Indian theatre. He has been the leading playwright of Marathi for more than fifty years. He started his career as a dramatist with his play, Shreemant (The Rich Man) in 1955. The play was directed by Vijaya Mehta for Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kala Kendra and was first staged on 12th December 1955.

Two thousand years ago Indians had their own theory of drama. OUT Sanskrit drama observed strictly the principles Natyasatra written by Bharatha.
