Nathaniel Hawthorne: 696 books

Published posthumously in 1872, this novel was very much a work-in-progress at the time of Hawthorne's death.  Nevertheless, it is of interest for its dramatic qualities—featuring an attempt to achieve immortality through science—and for its tragic story of greed and love.

Hawthorne addressed the murder of many innocents in the Witch Hunts.

Published in 1846, this short-story collection contains some of Hawthorne's darkest allegories.  Herman Melville, reviewing the collection, wrote, "You may be witched by his sunlight . . . but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds."
