The Phoenix Army (the PA) overwhelms the 4 Quadrants of LA they push out to the Coastal Townships, where they meet resistance from the RRR, a rebel group forced to live offshore. The PA turns captured women and girls into slaves while sending men and boys to meet certain death at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena (pyramids of skulls in the end zones).

The sun has set. Tony and Evo head east from the tiny town of Owl to discover the exclusive communities of Palm Springs are on fire. Familes huddle on their lawns as looters ransack their homes. This chapter was not included in the original PUNAHOU BLUES book because the publisher felt it cut against the loner persona of the main character. We disagree. It helps round out his character by showing him constructing friendships while building and designing the Haunted House for the school carnival.

The two sons of a Hawaiian attorney play a popular local game while waiting in the car outside Queen's Hospital. After a decade of infertility, their mother is close to giving birth.  The pressure of a third child is getting to the father. He orders his sons around as though they were his employees....

Ben and Jeff Gill are doing menial labor at their father's construction site on east end Molokai when Ben reports to the father that the heavy equipment operators are goofing off. One of the operators retaliates by cornering the brothers on an isolated beachfront off Puko'o Harbor. 

I slept on the makai side of the lanai. The kaka lines were tethered to the beach house and the moon made them glow as they moved up and down with the tide.
