The book is light hearted and easy to read. Mostly a collection on humorous ramblings and insights on German society held together with a thread of a story. It has the same charters as “Three Men in a Boat” which makes it nice to read after each other.

A man and his three children leave the “Little Mother” at home in the city and set up temporary housekeeping in a country cottage to supervise the remodeling of the house he has just purchased there. The story is narrated by the father. His interactions with his children, interspersed with his own recollections of past events, make for hilarious reading.

They and I is the story of a city family’s move to the country—the father anticipating a bucolic existence. However, their new neighbors are not quite quaint enough for him, and realities like milking cows in the morning interfere with his concept of a quiet existence. So much for an idyllic life!

Published in 1900, this sequel of sorts to the classic Three Men in a Boat features the same three characters—J. (the narrator and stand-in for the author), and his friends George and Harris—embarking on a "bummel"—"a journey, long or short, without an end," as J. describes it—through the Black Forest.

The author of Three Men in a Boat, writes himself in as a character in this marvelous novel. The plot unfolds as he and three of his bachelor friends (he is married) set out to write a novel. As they embark on this venture and their eccentricities come into play, will they ever manage to finish the story?

Although not the equal of his "Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow" (1886), one can still find sublime passages here and there that demonstrate the occasional genius of a wonderful observer and humorist. The passages are worth reading the rest. (Goodreads)
