The State of unemployment today
In our world today, unemployment is not just a global problem and serious concern, but a real threat to human survival and Nigeria is not left out. The worsening situation and statistics available indicates that in Nigeria for instance, 4 out of every 5 youths are either unemployable or are underemployed. And that 7 out of every 10 graduates from our Ivory Towers are virtually unemployed. This indeed, is a situation that demands a serious thought and state of emergency for urgent and alternative ways out.
The present situation is just too devastating that apart from fueling and serving as breeding ground for vices- including Arm-robbery, kidnapping, militancy, insurgencies, prostitution, and the spread of dangerous diseases, poverty, hunger and starvation among million are on the increase daily. Now, we are facing one of the world's worst financial crises in the history of mankind comparable with the great depression of the 1930s.
In the present circumstance, even the few working class and salary earners requires extra sources of income to meet up with the high cost of living. The dwindling economies with the collapsing of most business, has resulted to endemic poverty rates in most nations of the world. Consequently, many homes and families are languishing in abject poverty, hardship and distresses.
The gloomy picture was painted a short while ago in Nigeria during the last 2011 world population day celebration. It was reported and revealed that by October 31st, 2011, Nigeria's population world hit the 167 million by 2050. To many, this was a bleak future and an imminent catastrophe. Why? Because, poverty, ignorance, diseases, unemployment, hunger, violent crimes and vices with sufferings looms around due majorly, to lack of employments and means of livelihood for the active masses especially the youths and women.
At the global level, it has been advocated that eradicating absolute poverty is one of the cardinal agendas of the Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs -of the United Nations.
Now what is the way out?
In the mist of the present glooms and uncertain jobs crises, there is still a bright way out. And that is the Digital Jobs Revolution otherwise termed Freelancing.
