    Anthony Allen, a former runaway slave who became rich and famous, Peter Hose, Honolulu's first police officer of African descent  who was born on the island of Oahu in 1881. He was a beloved officer who did the hula while directing traffic. Betsey Stockton, teacher and missionary, William Crockett, graduate of the University of Michigan in 1888 who became a judge during the early 1900s in Maui, Nolle Smith, engineer and cowboy, Alice Ball, first woman to graduate with a degree in chemistry from the University of Hawaii in 1915, Eddie Cole (Nat King Cole's brother) actor and entertainer, James Young, jazz trombonist who played in the movie The Glenn Miller Story and jazz pianist Ernest Washington who performed with Dizzie Gillespie.
