The empire of Brac has secretly sowed the seeds of destruction and betrayal throughout the world. It spread a magically created plague into Silven, subverted the rulers of Goan and reduced the Merian army to a shadow of its former strength.

Langdon, alone, stands untouched. But Langdon has its own problems: a drunken king, counselors who sell each other gleefully for the gold coins pouring in from Brac, a crown prince whose stutter has made him a political liability, and his youngest brother with a secret which would destroy the royal family. There is no one in Langdon who can see Brac’s shadow of domination creeping inexorably closer.
