What would it be like to revisit your past? To reappear in the form of your own twelve-year-old self, with all the knowledge and hindsight of your adult experience? To know the future . . . and thus know how to manipulate it. Through an ancient gift of mythological wisdom, Gary Sundquist finds out.
A love affair, a plane crash, and a promise. Gary travels the mists of time in search of Clarissa, the woman of his dreams, who perished on a fiery Chicago runway while he heroically saved others. His only requirement of the journey is to promise to keep Clarissa off the plane his second time around, a promise proving very difficult to maintain.
Gary awakens in the year 1971 to the sounds of Vietnam, Nixon, Catholic school, and his parents--from the perspective of a fifty year-old man in a seventh grade body. While difficult enough during his first attempt, Gary now faces adolescence with the aggressive demeanor of a well- educated, highly seasoned newspaper reporter. Unfortunately, his new approach generates repeated disasters with family, friends, and his habit-wearing teachers.
Even good fortune brings misfortune. Gary is able to manifest tremendous amounts of wealth in a remarkably short time, only to bring tragic consequences upon his family. The implications are astounding. His slightest actions can bring about the most violent of repercussions.
Redemption is tough. After accidentally ruining the lives of numerous people around him, Gary tries to make good. He spends his adulthood directing his fortune toward creating a better world, but finds an unprepared society unwilling to help. His charitable crusades lead only to more conflict and grief.
By the time he is able to reacquaint with Clarissa, he is no longer the person who fell in love with her years earlier. Their new encounter leads to a fast-paced venture of mystery, suspense, and high drama. Unfortunately, the new relationship does not last long enough for Gary to keep the most important promise of his life: To prevent Clarissa from boarding the doomed jetliner. Gary finds himself back on the plane beside her, just as before. He has only two hours to decide on whether to truly be the hero he once was . . . or keep his promise.
