Arizona, 1869. Douglas Fenraw is a lawman tormented by memories of the night his wife and children were slain in front of him by an unknown gang. Now no more than a drifter with a badge, Fenraw is known for bringing his own brand of justice to any town that will pay him.
Fenraw's established reputation brings him to Wilburg, a dusty mining town south of the Gila mountains. The town council of Wilburg are keen to exploit a rich seam of gold in a range of hills occupied by a tribe of Apache Indians known as the Chokonen and they want Fenraw to help them achieve their goal.
Mayor Jacob Cleets provides Fenraw with his 'help', a dozen roughnecks who appear to be no more than a bunch of hoodlums led by local thug Jim Canton. Fenraw does some recruiting of his own to protect his back and hires the Kelly brothers a trio of black cowboys who he has worked with before. Fenraw also recruits Silent, a destitute mute who proves to be a ruthless killer when provoked.
Fenraw clashes with the town council over their plans to enlist mercenaries to wipe out the Chokonen. The only thing holding back the bloodshed is a tough family of Scottish miners who are encamped at the base of the Gila mountains.
Fenraw's relations with the McNairns gets off to a rocky start but when a savage attack on nearby homesteaders occurs, Fenraw is forced to make a fateful decision that will send all parties into a bitter struggle for survival. In Wilburg no one can be trusted and the good die first.
