Animal Tales is a series of 12 controlled readers bringing Dr. Phil McGraw’s Life Strategies to 3rd-5th graders. Students are taken on an African adventure where the life strategies are presented as fables.
The Okapi’s Tale is the second book in the series. In this book, readers watch Jake as he complains about all the rules he has to follow at home and his disregard for some of those rules. Furious with his parents, he stomps to his room rather than spending time with them.
Grandpa decides that the time is ripe to teach Jake his first lesson (or life strategy) so he’s transported to the village. Once there, the boy shares his anger and problems with his friend, Nia, expecting her to understand. But she doesn’t. In fact, she’s shocked that Jake is acting like such a loser.
Grandpa intervenes by sending Jake and Elena to the Ituri Forest. There, they watch a tale unfold where an okapi named Malia show how good life can be when you ‘get it’ and choose to be a winner rather than a loser.
Because of Malkia’s actions, okapis were given the legs of zebras, the neck and tongue of giraffes, and the body of bongos; this was to remind all animals of the importance of making good choices in life.
On the way back to the village, Jake faces a challenge and shows that he’s learned this first lesson well. Thus, his success is celebrated. Before being transported home, Jake reviews his lesson with Nia.
With the learning of this first life strategy, Jake’s journey into adulthood has begun.
