This booklet is a sample of a full-length book. It is Chapter 22 in Ameritrekking and Highpointing: Finding the Lost River Range. If you already have that book, don’t buy this booklet.
This story tells the tale of the author's visit to Driskill Mountain, the highpoint of Louisiana. A highpoint is the highest naturally occurring geographic point in a state. Magazine Mountain is the 48th-highest highpoint in the 50 states. The summit is 535 feet above sea level. The visit took place in the same year (1997) as the third Ameritrek, the subject of the main book, Finding the Lost River Range. This is one chapter from that book, so you can travel vicariously to Louisiana's highest point and sample the writing at the same time.
The author started out a deskbound accountant and refers to his highpointing adventures (and occasional misadventures) as mountaineering for mortals. In Louisiana, he drove and walked to the top of Driskill Mountain, so no traditional climbing was involved. This is not a comprehensive guide detailing every possible route to the top. It is Joe's JOE: his Journal Of Experiences.
The main book resulted from an 8,000-mile, three-week road trip visiting other highpoints and local and national parks in 20 states.
So far, the author has driven more than 100,000 miles and spent over a year on the road. He has been to 45 highpoints and many other strange and wonderful places. He continues to travel and write. Buy this sample booklet and join the adventure today!
