This story is based upon the legend of the first Marquis of Monferrato, Aleramo, . His mother, being unable to have children, makes a pilgrimage to Rome. She becomes pregnant and gives birth in Sezzadio, where her child is baptised with the name Aleramo. His parents leave him in Sezzadio where a nurse takes care of him. They carry on their pilgrimage, never seeing him again. Aleramo becomes a knight for the German Emperor Otto I and falls in love with his beautiful daughter Alasia. The Emperor does not allow their marriage and the two lovers are forced to escape. After Alasia's premature death, Aleramo marries two more times.
The Marquis manages to stop Saracen attacks. Empress Adelaide admires his diplomatic skills and wants him to become Imperial Dignitary, helping him to get the title of Marquis of the Committees of Acqui, Savona, Asti, Monferrato, Torino, Vercelli, Parma, Cremona and Bergamo.
