Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. His creation is individualized by sardonic view of human nature and criticism. Participated the American Civil War, he composed the writing style with an abrupt beginnings, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events and the theme of war. “A Vine on a House” is the mystical story, tells about the strange old house, that stood empty about few years, and no one likely lived in it. Five years ago the house was last occupied by a family named Harding consisted of Robert Harding, his wife Matilda, her sister Miss Julia Went, and two young children. Robert Harding was a silent, cold-mannered man who had no friends. Once Mrs.Harding went to visit her mother in Iowa and did not came back; two years later, without selling his farm or removing the household goods, Harding, with the rest of the family, left the country and retained the house, that after a few months was covered by a long vine… What secret does the old house hide and where did Mrs. Harding go?
