Stanley is notified by an Angel that his soul is being repossessed for failure to say the prayers he promised after a narrow escape from death. He received a first notice in the mail but laughed that off, now he has only a short time to make some arrangement with Heaven.
The Angel uses the body of a recently dead but not yet discovered woman to deliver the message in a shopping mall which leads to major questions about Stanley when her body is subsequently found and specifics about how and when she died bother the police. This happens just after Stanley meets Maureen, a woman he really wants to get to know but who is left wondering what kind of a person he can be. She must decide to take it on herself to find out whether he is a liar, a murderer, or crazy.
Ultimately Maureen pressures the Angel to meet with her using a different body and makes it see how its choice of a body to use caused so much confusion and driven Stanley to the edge of dispair. That possibility goads the Angel to tell her exactly what happened and she spots the details that will let the police prove how the other woman died in an accidental fall and that Stanley had nothing to do with it. Maureen finally accepts that his claim about being visited by a Repo Angel has some kind of truth to it but they hope not to have to deal with that in their future together.
