Dan Jacobson doesn’t know what to do with himself. Trapped in a small town and a failing relationship, with a job he hates, he’s a drowning man who needs a way out. When a chance meeting gives him the lifeline he’s been looking for, he’ll be forced to make a choice he never thought he’d face…

Part 1 of a series

Excerpt:

Laura took another sip of her wine, and with her courage sufficiently stimulated, dove in headfirst.
'So, you're on the prowl tonight, huh?'

Jen smiled slyly at Laura, a small measure of embarrassment washing over her. Laura was afraid that she might actually make her blush.
'Oh my god, is it that obvious? I didn't want to look like a slut or anything.'
Laura laughed that one off. Jen didn't look like anything of the kind, and Laura didn't think she could if she tried. She stated as much, and the girls sat in a moment of awkward silence, until Laura broached the subject once again.

'So, any particular person you have in mind?' The smile returned, and Jen seemed to contemplate something before she answered. Finally, she seemed to make a decision.
'Well, there is one guy. One of Sharon's friends.'

There it was, Laura thought. 'Ok, spill,' she said, turning fully to face Jen. Her every move conveyed that she was a willing and attentive listener.
Jen seemed to have a small reticence, but it was obvious to the older woman that she wanted to talk about it. That was understandable; if the guy in question were one of Sharon's friends, Jen wouldn't want to discuss it with her until she knew for certain that she wouldn't be interfering with Sharon's plans. Well, Laura thought, she knows she can trust me. Meditating on that thought, she waited patiently, letting Jen come to her own decision. After a moment, she caved.

'His name's Dan. He's a really nice guy, but there's something about him. He's... different.'
