Timothy Nonn played a key role in organizing two global movements for human rights. During the 1980s, he was an organizer in the Sanctuary Movement, which provided assistance to refugees fleeing war-torn Central America. From 2004 to 2008, he was an organizer in the Darfur Movement, which sought to end genocide in Sudan. As a national leader in both of these movements, he has given countless media interviews and spoken at a broad range of venues including colleges and high schools, churches and synagogues and public rallies. He has a Masters of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union. He has received several awards and honors for his humanitarian work, including the 2007 Charles Shelby Rooks Social Prophet Award from the United Church of Christ.
