Who could ever think that a simple ten-minute stroll to the village grocery shop could be fraught with so much danger and excitement? Read this book and you'll be desperate to visit the village stores for your bag of sugar too. However, be careful! Watch out for the Sugar Monster.

This story is beautifully illustrated with numerous magical images, composed by Skippy Beresford.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Maxwell craned his head towards the ear of his younger brother and he dropped his voice down to a barely audible whisper. Maxwell cupped one hand around his mouth and leant forwards, whispering a stern warning into the awaiting ear of his younger brother.

“Skippy Skippy - can’t you see? The Sugar Monster – will eat thee!”

Skippy’s eyebrows mounted in puzzled wonderment and the hairs on the back of his neck began to tremble and rise in a multitude of tiny goose pimples.

“What’s a Sugar Monster?” he whispered in a trembling voice.

Maxwell relaxed his cupped hand and lowered it to his side; his voice adopted an air of ancient knowledge as he looked sternly into the face of his younger brother.

“Have you ever wondered why we are the only elves in the whole village?” he asked in feigned puzzlement.

Skippy looked back at his older brother and shrugged his shoulders upwards with a slight twitch.

“The Sugar Monster’s gobbled all the others up!” Maxwell lied, “The village used to be full of laughing, playing elven children until its awful arrival.”
