The myth of the Stollenberg Convoy is one of the most enduring of World War II. As the
Third Reich crumbled, orders were sent from Berlin to hide countless art  treasures looted from all over Europe. According to the legend, the most precious shipment of all had been entrusted to a hard-bitten SS colonel, Manfred Stollenberg, but it never reached its destination. Ever since, rumours and theories about the treasure's existence have fascinated academics and treasure hunters alike.

Fifty years after the event, merchant seaman Malcolm Kyle first hears the story from flat mate David McDonald, a military historian obsessed with the case. When Kyle returns from sea only for McDonald to die immediately following their initial, curiously-cryptic telephone reunion - ostensibly the victim of an accident - he refuses to accept the official explanation. The more he looks into the recent, and increasingly bizarre activities of his dearest friend, the more convinced he becomes that there is a connection with the Stollenberg myth, and that his own life is now in grave danger … particularly when the cadavers begin to accumulate, and the spectres of old, long-dead soldiers to stir.

In this remarkable novel of murder, mystery and remorselessly escalating mayhem, Callison pilots the reader through a saga that began amid the burning ruins of a collapsing Nazi Germany only to reach its tension-strung climax over half a century later aboard a coffin ship in the storm-shredded waters of the eastern Mediterranean.

Brian Callison has done for the modern sea adventure what Patrick O'Brian did for the Napoleonic Wars. Another stunning sea chase … one of Callison's best thrillers yet. Packed with suspense and tremendously pacy, this is one for the enthusiast.  BIRMINGHAM POST.

A riveting piece of maritime action with a fifty-year-old mystery at its core. With all the energy we expect from Callison, the detail of this nautical thriller has all the requisite authenticity.  GOOD BOOK GUIDE.
