The Science Behind Alien Encounters

Astronomers agree the universe has more stars in it then there are grains of sand on Earth.  They would also agree that we are within only decades of discovering that the universe is teeming with life and probably intelligent life. Given that there are stars billions of years older than our own sun, it is probable that there is intelligent life more advanced than that on Earth. Fifty years ago humans ventured into space for the first time. Today we have sent probes to every planet in our solar system and are making plans to send humans to Mars. What would the capabilities be for intelligent beings that are a few million (or even just a few thousand) years more advanced than us. Surely they would have the capabilities to explore our galaxy. Even though most astronomers might agree that there is intelligent life out there, most would argue that the distances are too great for even a highly advanced life form to travel the light years that separate most stars. These astronomers base their reasoning on the chemical rockets we have been using as a means of propulsion. What if there is a better means of propulsion which we are just now discovering. Gravitation field propulsion is not only theoretically possible but has been demonstrated in the labs.
