Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him. Lang was also a prolific author of works both fiction and non.
The Punishment of the Fairy Gangana is a fairy tale, included in the Andrew Lang’s Olive Fairy Book. The story is set in a kingdom so small, that one can easily walk it all round in a matter of day. Its rulers, a king and a queen, were very kindhearted, perhaps eve too much. Too much freedom there was for the king’s subjects, no one obeyed the law, and the king did care much about that. But all this disorder and kingdom’s ridiculous size did not happen without reason…
