The Broken Halo by Florence L. Barclay

A Christian Romance

He was a powerfully built youth, who rode with head erect, his right hand on the handlebar, his left plunged into the pocket of an old blue flannel coat, bearing on its breast the arms of some club or college. His white flannels, turned well up over old tennis shoes, had by no means the immaculate Sabbath appearance of the shepherd’s smock-frock. A blue flannel cap, also bearing a shield with arms embroidered, was stuck jauntily on the back of his head. His sunburnt face, brown and clean-shaven, his broad low brow, from which the dark hair rose thick and close-cropped, carried a look of indomitable vigour —masterful, virile, self-assured.

His brown eyes, bright and keen of glance, took in the whole landscape as he rode, and the gay joie-de-vivre on his boyish face was so infectious, that jaded passers-by who saw it, smiled unconsciously, and went on their way realising that, after all, this really is a beautiful world.
