The dictionary defines assertiveness as, "confidently self assured.” That’s a fairly good description of what most of us hope to be, confident and self assured.

The general idea of being assertive is being able to stand up for yourself. It is about upholding who you are. Whether you do it passively or aggressively, the point is you can say what you want to say, you are able to form decisions, you are capable of standing up for those decisions regardless the consequences.

In the process of knowing yourself, the question always becomes: Am I assertive? Am I too assertive? Am I assertive to the point of being aggressive? Aggressiveness is always seen in a negative light and no one wants to be known as a push over. Hence, the goal is to find that fine line in between too much and too little assertiveness.

Can you stand up for yourself and still compromise and find the balance to know when to let go or when to give in a little bit? You can develop your assertive skills and this book will guide you to do that. Specifically you will learn some of the following:

·         How to measure your assertiveness
·         How to assertively communicate with co-workers
·         How to talk to your boss about problems or concerns
·         How to say no and be assertive in social settings
·         When to say “no”
·         How to say "no" and not feel guilty about it

Assertiveness is definitely a useful skill to have. If you know how to use it positively, in a way that is not off-putting, insulting or impolite to others, then it can be a very powerful skill to utilize!
