Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903) was an American writer working in the genres humour and satire and collecting folklore. He studied American and European traditions and travelled a lot while working as a journalist. Leland became famous for his comic book 'Hans Breitman's Ballads'.

This is an old Indian legend that was collected and retold by Charles Leland. It tells us about a woman who comes to a lake and sees a huge serpent coming out of it. When she comes back to her village the locals notice that she is bearing a child - a child from the great serpent. So the villagers make her go in exile and the poor girl goes wandering alone…
