As she approached her car, she saw a man standing on the passenger side as if waiting for her. Her mind registered that she knew him and her thoughts tried to come up with a name. Eventually, Luke Mathews popped into her head. He had graduated a few years earlier than her, but she still remembered his handsome good looks. At one time, she had a giant crush on him, but back then, he couldn’t see her for the world. She was just a little starry eyed youngster showing how he interested her.
Her quick glance took in his rugged appearance. Dark hair just a little long hung low across his forehead and reached down below the collar of his plaid shirt covering a wide chest and broad shoulders. He wore a pair of denim jeans that looked as if they were molded to his thighs and long legs. He still looked devastatingly handsome as she caught his deep piercing green eyes watching her closely.
When she started to unlock her door, he moved with a swiftness that surprised her and was within inches of her in seconds. “Do you remember me?” he asked in a husky tone, the sound sending vibrations through her body. Jada had to admit she loved the sound and could listen to it forever.
“Yes, from high school,” she admitted, hoping her voice didn’t give her emotions away. The man did strange things to her even now as he had done in the past. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you, though. Do you still live in the area?”
“No, our family moved out to the country, but still remain in Connecticut.”
She watched his features as different emotions flitted across his handsome face. “Was there something I can do for you?”
“Would you consider going across the street to the diner for a cup of coffee? I need to talk to you about something.”
A confused look lined Jada’s face, but she shook her head in agreement. She walked with Luke to the café and entered finding an empty booth. Soon a waitress bounced across the room and took their order. Once the steamy mugs of coffee where brought to the table, Luke glanced down at the dark liquid before beginning.
“What I’m going to ask you may put you off, but I didn’t know where else to turn.” His tone held almost a desperate ring. “I have to show you something.” He reached for his wallet and opened it. Inside was a picture of a young woman.
Jada glanced at the snapshot and got the shock of her life. The image of the woman bounced back at her and looked exactly like her.
