Mechanical Acting: An Essay

The object is to create a paint by the numbers acting technique. Script analysis tells you how to deliver your lines. You then sing the dialog, dance your blocking and express your emotions with a musical instrument. You attempt to impersonate, not avoid former noted performers of the part. Basic improvisation technique relies on playing to your opposites in the improvisation to create realistic emotions and dialog. You adapt the scenario to fit some personal goal with respect to the other players. You investigate the players and not the sketchy characters laid out by the coach. This is the best way for inexperienced actors to develop quality improvisation.
