This is the twenty-second story in the series that covers the lives of Detective Chief Inspector Victor Moyes and his second in command Detective Sergeant Victoria Morgan. The stories are set in the nineteen sixties before the advent of the mobile phone and computer age when they relied on old fashioned policing methods which were slow and laborious.

The animosity between Victor and Victoria continues as they strive to uncover the theft of a number of pictures from Westleigh Manor, the country seat of Sir Jeffry Fortiscue-Barry, who suffers from dementia and is looked after by his aging butler. A number of murders occur which on the face of it don’t seem to be connected, although many of the characters’ lives overlap, throwing confusion on their enquiries.
