The nineteenth in the series of stories covering the lives of Detective Chief Inspector Victor Moyes sees them attempt to bring to book a vicious killer while trying to come to terms with their personal problems. Victoria has been called to appear in front of a disciplinary board, causing her to go off the rails for a period. While Victor, having plucked up courage to ask her to accompany him on weekend away only to be turned down, feels that the world has again turned against him as far as romance is concerned.
This inevitably leads to a certain amount of conflict in their working relationship, and is not helped by the fact that Victoria is much brighter than him, although she makes it appear that it is him who solves the crimes.
