A comma, says Laura, is a pause in a sentence. It is inevitably following by a full stop. But the pause can be quite long and a lot can happen in between – new, pleasurable and useful things, as well as the opposite. So it is with punctuation and so it is with life.

Laura, Margaret and Jane are, they hope, closer to the comma than to the full stop. From knowing one another as teenagers in Scotland, they have kept in touch and are now in their seventies and living in a retirement village in the South of England.

Frances Greenaway writes with wry humour about relations with children, elderly parents and growing old. These are serious social and personal issues and Comma is therefore a book of our time – but optimistic and life affirming.
