An Unworldly Mansion

An Unworldly Mansion is the sequel to a story included in Ronnie Coleinger’s fiction short story collection titled, My Side of Sanity Collection. That short story by the title, The Fate of the Mage, never felt complete and Ronnie decided to take the story to a conclusion.
This sequel revolves around a man by the Name of Charlie, who while hiking up a mountain trail for a few day of prospecting in his gold mine, finds himself stranded in a high mountain plateau while an ice storm forces him to hunker down under his tarp for the night. During the night, while he tried to remain warm, he discovers a door in the side of the mountain and decides to investigate. The magic of the mountain lures him to knock on the door and request entrance. He soon discovers that a very powerful mage built the mansion inside the mountain and her magic now forces him to do her bidding for the next two hundred years.

When he stopped in front of the door, he realized that it in fact appeared to be an entrance. He put his hand out, laid it on the surface of the door and felt warmth. He decided to try using the doorknocker to see if someone was actually behind the door. If the door was warm, then there had to be some form of heat inside the rock. If there was heat, he wanted to get inside and warm himself. When no one came to the answer his knock, he tried knocking again, with the same result. Finally, in desperation, he said, “Whoever is inside, would you please let me in so I can get warm.” What happened then made him take three steps back away from the door and reconsider his desire to gain entry. A voice from behind or within the door said, “This door is locked.”

After a couple of minutes, Charlie decided that he wanted to know who lived inside the stone built mansion. Whoever had spoken to him would certainly allow a traveler to enter long enough to warm up in front of the fire. Charlie knocked again and said, “Please allow me entry. I am cold and will certainly perish if I stay out here in this wind much longer.” After speaking those words, he heard a loud click, as if someone had unlocked the door. He reached up, took hold of the doorknocker and pulled on it. The door moved a little and then made a loud squeaking sound, as if the old hinges had not moved in many years. He pulled again and the door came open enough for him to see what was inside.
