The Kodiak Letter

A hunter, looking to harvest a deer or moose in a remote area of southwestern Yukon, Canada, stumbles upon a fresh bear kill. The hunter tracks the blood in the snow and discovers a single engine plane that crashed in the dense forest. At first, the hunter fears that a bear killed the pilot. A careful search of the area seems to indicate that the pilot might have survived the crash and be hiding in an old abandoned mine.

An Excerpt

Bill could hear his heart beating in his chest and his face was hot, sure signs of buck fever: bull fever in this case. When the huge animal took a few steps forward, Bill moved the barrel into position so he could see the tip of the white front sight clearly centered behind the animal’s front shoulder. Bill knew that he would need to fire a second round into the huge bull to drop it. That second shot would have to occur just as the first bullet struck home and the animal froze in its tracks. Bill took a deep breath and slowly let it slide out of his lungs. In his state of anxiety, the sound of his eyes blinking sounded like a strike of a kettledrum in an echo chamber, his slow exhale rose in the cold air and created a vapor cloud just above his head. As Bill’s finger slowly squeezed the trigger, allowing the front site of his rifle to move slowly around the exact spot he hoped to hit with the first bullet. The sound of the gun going off startled Bill. He felt the recoil and instinctively reached for the lever to rack another shell into the chamber of his rifle.
