Cooper felt it. It was like someone had punched a hole through his left shoulder with a branding iron. He had caught that round with his name on it. He fell to the ground, lying on the wet grass. His vision blurred. He heard the sounds of sirens, but they were not close enough. Dryness set in his mouth. He could not move his left arm. He heard movement from the direction of the house.
He turned his head and saw death with an AK-47 walking toward him. Death was sneering, almost laughing at him. Cooper felt around him on the ground for his Beretta. He had dropped it when he fell. Moving his right hand around, he could not find it. When he had fallen, he had pulled Nathan closer to him, across Cooper’s legs.
