Timothy Nonn played a key role in organizing two global movements for human rights. During the 1980s, he was an organizer in the Sanctuary Movement, which provided assistance to refugees fleeing war-torn Central America. From 2004 to 2008, he was an organizer in the Darfur Movement, which sought to end genocide in Sudan. His community-based model of organizing was praised in several books on the Darfur Movement, including Not on Our Watch by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast and Where Mercy Fails by Chris Herlinger and Paul Jeffrey.
As a national leader in both of these movements, he has given countless media interviews and spoken at a broad range of venues including colleges and high schools, churches and synagogues and public rallies. He has a Masters of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union. He has received several awards and honors for his humanitarian work, including the 2007 Charles Shelby Rooks Social Prophet Award from the United Church of Christ.
