This Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) independent training course manual from the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) provides a foundation of knowledge that will enable participants to describe different types of natural disasters, describe hazards that pose a risk to their home or small business, explain how protective measures can reduce or eliminate long-term risks to their home and personal property from hazards and their effects, and explain how protective measures for small businesses secure people, business property, and building structures and prevent business loss from a natural disaster.
The primary audience for IS-394.a, like its predecessor, is small business owners, homeowners, and individual citizens. It is presented in a non-technical format and includes protective measures that can reduce the negative consequences of disasters on homes or small businesses.
This course has five lessons:
Lesson 1. Overview: Protecting Against Disasters—Provides an overview of the types of disasters that are most likely to damage homes and businesses, and addresses the likelihood that these hazards will affect your community.
Lesson 2. Protecting Against Water Damage—Describes how to determine your risk of flooding, describes a range of methods to avoid water damage, and discusses the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Lesson 3. Protecting Against Wind Damage—Describes risks from hurricanes and tornadoes, and provides methods to protect your home or place of business from wind damage.
Lesson 4. Protecting Against Wildfires—Describes locations that are particularly susceptible to damage from wildfires, and actions you can take to protect your home or place of business from wildfires.
Lesson 5. Protecting Against Earthquake Damage—Discusses areas of the United States that are considered most at risk from earthquakes, and describes ways to protect your home or place of business from earthquake damage.
This is a privately authored news service and educational publication of Progressive Management.
